Reasoning in AI

The operational capability to transform premises, context, and constraints into a conclusion or plan through dependent steps. In language models, it is assessed through performance on tasks that require composition, inference, planning, or verifiable tool use rather than response fluency alone.

The term does not identify a single internal mechanism. A correct answer may appear without a visible explanation, and a persuasive explanation may accompany a wrong conclusion. Evaluating reasoning requires cases with verifiable answers, interventions on evidence, and comparisons with baselines that rule out memorization or shallow shortcuts.
